If you have ever watched a drag boat race, you can attest to the heart pumping action as you hold your breath watching how fast these incredible boats skim across the water at top speeds. The LakeFest Drag Boat Race in Marble Falls, TX is coming up August 8-10, 2014 and even though it has been going 22 years strong, it is still a highlight event that brings spectators from all over to watch the action.
If you are only familiar with drag racing on land, there are many similarities with racing on water. Two boats go against each other for the lowest elapsed time on a straight course. The most common length in drag boat racing is 1,000 feet. There are numerous categories similar to regular drag racing such as engine configuration, fuel type, hull design and propulsion type. The premier class is always the Top Fuel Hydroplane class in which boats are capable of covering a quarter of a mile in less than four seconds. It is truly spectacular to watch.
For this event, Lake Marble Falls turns into the quarter-mile racetrack and the shoreline comes alive during the three-day party. In 2012 this race had the highest boat registration next to the World Finals, which is a testament to the caliber of this event. It is very well organized and a ton of fun. To kick it all off, around 100 boats will take to the water to “test and tune-up” on Friday and then in the evening, the drivers and boats will all be at Johnson Park for fans to have a meet and greet session and get a close-up look at the incredible boats. A live concert tops off the night. Races are all day Saturday, another concert happens that night and then Sunday the final races are on after opening ceremonies. Fast boats and superb food in a fun atmosphere with a great crowd of people makes this an event you don’t want to miss.
